We're Over It: Birthdays, Permission and Girlfriend Detectives
Michelle and Ben finally hate the same thing
We’re Over It: Birthdays
Michelle and Ben finally agree on something! We hate birthdays! To be more specific, our own birthdays. (We love our kid’s excitement for her birthday - we’re not total sociopaths! Well, at least Michelle isn’t 🤪)
Ben views birthdays as a yearly reminder that while he’s gotten older, he’s yet to achieve the level of success he intends. He also doesn’t like organizing and gathering friends. His two solutions:
Do a big show, where he does a long set, on or around his birthday. This puts his focus on doing work and also increases the number of friends that actually come watch him because it’s his only “birthday party event”
In the years he doesn’t do a big show, Ben sends an email blast of where he’ll be all evening and explicitly says, “Don’t tell me if you’re coming just surprise me.” That way he’s pleasantly surprised when someone shows up and forgets who he invited that didn’t.
Michelle won’t even post her birthday on Facebook because she will focus on everyone who didn’t take the time to wish her happy birthday on her wall. And she doesn’t tell her real-life friends so they don’t feel obliged to spend time with her. Then all the pressure gets put on Ben to plan Michelle’s perfect day.
This setup ensures Michelle hates her birthday, while Ben hates his birthday and Michelle’s birthday 😉
(As you might’ve guessed from this rant, one of us has a birthday coming up.)
