Networking: Cool or Lame?
Michelle went to a "women in business" networking event. Ben heard the post-game play-by-play and had opinions.
We’re Over It: WOMEN IN BIZ NETWORKING
This week Michelle went to a local “women in business” networking event. Due to Michelle’s prompting, Ben and Michelle had a dispute over how to effectively follow up after a networking event.
Michelle decided to solve this by writing to a pal of hers, an expert in networking whose great newsletter she often reads, wrote to Michael Roderick.
Here’s a truncated cheekier version of the letter Michelle wrote:
I'm looking for a pro-Michael tip. I feel like you're the Dear Abby for networking questions.
Dear Michael,
I went to a local women's networking event last night. Since I’m new in town I was cruising for both contacts and cronies. (Aka the married 40-something version of donuts and dick.)
I got 12 business cards in about an hour because I know how to work a room. Sure it's quality not quantity, but digits are digits. At least when you’re cruising for donuts. I spent about two hours crafting personalized nice-to-meet-you emails. Ben said I shouldn’t have spent so much time writing follow-up emails that I was procrastinating other work. I said I was making connections. What do you think? It’s not a big deal so if you side with Ben, he won’t be sleeping on the couch… but if you side with me there will be a victory dance.
If you want to read Michael’s reply to Michelle, you’ll have to read his newsletter that just came out or read ours next week. Yes, we love cliffhangers!

We’re Over It: YOUR THOUGHTS ON NETWORKING
In your opinion, do networking events:
A. Help build new connections. Especially when you “sponsor” an event. I.e. you have a booth and are prominently featured.
B. Could go either way, depends on how you work the room and follow-up.
C. Hope they have free booze because that’s all they’re worth.
