Backyards are overrated

We’re Over It: BACKYARDS
One of the most coveted amenities in NYC real estate is an “outdoor space.” This can be anything from a backyard, to a terrace to a fire escape.
Your odds of getting outdoor space without being a hedgefund billionaire go up significantly if you’re willing to saunter off the island of Manhattan and live in Brooklyn, Queens or even (gasp!) Staten Island.
Which is our way of saying, we have outdoor space. And it’s an actual backyard.
The best thing about having a backyard is the sunshine. Until it’s summer and the sun’s overhead and it’s too hot and you can’t see your phone screen, then why even bother?!
An even worse part of a backyard is the mosquitoes. From May to August we barely go outside because anytime we do, here come five fresh bites.
Oh! And for half the year it’s too cold to sit outside. That leaves three nice days in April before the insects hatch and three nice weeks in September after the bugs die.
So is it worth having a backyard? After living in this place for eight years, we’re still not sure! We might be better off having all that outdoor space as part of the house, as “a bonus room” as my friend calls hers. Ben thinks the answer is an enclosed outdoor space, aka a veranda. Michelle thinks Ben is just showing off that he knows the word “veranda.”
But our real current answer is: we have no choice because we’re renters. So we can make as much difference to the backyard situation as one vote makes in an election. Long live transience!
